What Determines A Cheap DSL Internet Service? This is hardly the case as there is so much competition in the market when it comes to DSL internet access that cheap DSL needs to be good too. The Internet is all about downloads these days; you can download movies, songs and even cell phone ring tones. In order to get interference-free DSL internet services you need to make sure that the DSL provider is not farther away than three to four miles from your premises - farther than that will cause frequent failure of internet service.
While it may seem like the quality of your DSL service depends on your service provider, there are some steps you can take to get the most out of your broadband connection. Below are a few useful suggestions.
Clean Your Computer
Install a good antivirus program like Norton AntiVirus. Some DSL service providers, like Yahoo, now include virus scanning for broadband accounts. Viruses not only pose a security risk to your private information that's stored on your hard drive but they also clog your computer system by running programs in the background.
You should also clear out the cache file of your web browser. Most let you do this by clicking on the 'Tools' section of the toolbar and selecting the various clear data options. Get rid of any cookies to run most efficiently. You might have to type in a few passwords again but the bump in DSL speed will be worth it.
Finally, defragment your hard drive. Saving and deleting data over and over breaks the data on the hard drive into chunks scattered here and there, making the computer take longer to access the information. Defragmenting squishes those chunks into one block. This will boost the speed of all of your computer's operations.
Reboot and Restart
If problems occur over the course of several minutes, save your work and then reboot the computer. Also turn off your DSL modem and leave it off for at least one minute. Turn it back on, and once all the lights on the front of the modem stop blinking and turn green, you should have a brand-new connection to your DSL service. That might be all it takes to get back up to speed.
You also might want to temporarily disable any firewall program that is running. Turn it off, than see if that fixes the problem. If so, ask your DSL service provider to recommend a firewall program that's compatible with their equipment. Again, some, like Yahoo, will include one with your account.
Test Your Speed
If your DSL service seems slower than you think it should be, review your service contract to see what sort of speed you're paying for. Then go online to find a speed test - there are several on the web that won't cost anything and don't take much time.
Compare the results to your contract. If the speeds don't match your agreement, call your DSL service provider to find out why. You can also try software like DSL Speed that optimizes your computer's speed to improve performance.
